The Lucky Travels Buddha represents a Hotei. He is found in both Japanese(Hotei) and Chinese(Budai) cultures. The Hotei represents a jolly, plump Buddhist monk that lived in the town of Fenghu during the later Ling Dynasty of China (907-923 C.E.). He is said to have traveled the countryside giving candy to children from his endless supply found in the nap sack he carried over his shoulder. He represents prosperity and wealth and is well known for his generosity and good nature. He is the patron of the poor, the weak and the children. He was well loved and the news of his death spread rapidly throughout Asia. Statues were made of this famous monk and placed in the homes and businesses of the people in the hopes of bringing good fortune. It is also said that after his death people referred to him as a reincarnation of the Maitreya Bodhisattva (the Future Buddha) because of his ability to predict the weather. He is also often referred to as the laughing Buddha.
